WDF statement on passing of veteran peasants leader Ch Fateh Muhammad

WDF expressed deep grief over the passing of peasants’ leader Chaudhary Fateh Muhammad

Members of the Women Democratic Front extended heartfelt condolences to the family, comrades and the members of Awami Workers Party on the sad demise of veteran peasants and trade union leader Chaudhary Fateh Muhammad. He started organizing in Lyallpur in the 1950s with the textile industry workers and later peasants. Chaudhary Fateh Muhammad played a critical role in the organising peasants movement in Pakistan. He was the chief organizer of the 1970 historical kissan conference which was attended by hundreds of thousands of political workers, peasants, workers and students. Maulana Bhashani attended and addressed this conference after traveling with other leftists political workers on a train from Lahore to Toba. It is written that the slogans such as “chalo chalo toba chalo” were chanted in the now- Bangladesh. The conference was attended by members of Sindh Haari Committee, NSO, people from Balochistan, Punjab and KP along with railway labour leader Mirza Ibrahim, Abid Hasan Minto, student leader Ghazala Shabnum, and Kaniz Fatima amongst many others. The kissan conference holds historical significance for the unity of left across the country, at the time especially in Punjab. Chaudhary Fateh Muhammad was detained many times during his political life, the first time was when he contested 1951 elections as a candidate of Communist Party of Pakistan and later in the Lahore Qilla torture case. His biography is an account of his efforts and the mistakes of the left in which he talks about the importance and the need for the unity of the left. In his efforts to unite the left, he was part of the formation of Awami Workers Party and remained its lifelong member. We express our deep condolences to the party. The vision and political lessons taught by the life and struggle of Chaudhary Fateh Muhammad will forever serve as a guiding light for the left in Pakistan. Today in him we lost a great leader and visionary. We salute the lifelong commitment and revolutionary spirit of Chaudhary Fateh Muhammad. Rest in Power Comrade Lal Salam!
